Materials for Coin Purse:

  • Metal Purse clasp (mine is 4 inches wide, any size will do)
  • Yarn
  • Hook size for yarn choice
  • Yarn needle
  • scissors
  • hand sewing needle
  • thread that matches yarn

My kit includes everything you need, down to the perfect color thread for you yarn, scissors and the proper needles.

Instructions to Crochet Coin Purse Body:

-Start with a Magic Circle
-Round 1: sc 7 inside the magic circle
-slip stitch to first sc to complete round
-Round 2: Ch 2, 2sc in each stitch all the way around
-Slip stitch to complete round
-Round 3: Ch 2, 2sc in first stitch, sc 1; repeat
-Slip stitch to complete round
-Round 4: Ch 2, 2sc in first stitch, sc 2; repeat
-Slip stitch to complete round
-Round 5: Ch 2, 2sc in first stitch, sc 3; repeat
-Slip stitch to complete round
*Continue increasing the base of the coin purse with this pattern (2sc, sc 4 – 2sc, sc 5 and so on) until it is about the same size as the metal clasp. If you purchased my kit that is about 4 inches in diameter.
-Once you have reached the size of your clasp (make sure to measure size of clasp when it’s open. Sc in each stitch continuing around until desired height of purse.
-Make sure right side is facing out.
-Slip Stitch in front loop only all the way around and fasten off.
-Add yarn and slip stitch in the back loop only and fasten off.
-Weave in all ends with yarn needle and trim tails.

This process is very similar to my crochet basket tutorial.

Attach the Crochet Coin Purse to Metal Clasp:

-Thread hand sewing needle with coordinating thread color about 12-18 inches long.
-Wrap thread around a few fibers on the inside of the pouch to secure thread.
-Insert the metal clasp in between the slip stitches on the pouch edge.
-Thread the needle from the back loop slip stitch, through the hole in the metal clasp, and through the front loop, the move to the next hole on the metal clasp and continue in the same manner.
-Check on your fit half way through so that you can slightly stretch or slightly gather the crochet and get the proper fit – the crochet is pretty forgiving.
-Tie off thread to secure and trim thread

Enjoy!

This was great! However, I'm looking for the clasp with the larger closure knobs and am having a difficult time finding them in my area. Any suggestions besides Etsy? I'm not sure I'm ready to buy several at a time. Thank you.
