Hey Everyone! My newest crochet video is up with the Lionbrand Heartland Yarn, but I also tested out this pattern with the Caron Simply Soft Yarn. The Caron yarn is the same weight but much finer, so I had to modify the instructions a bit. So, you can watch the video for all the stitches and the basic construction of the hat, but the numbers of stitches in each round will be different for the Caron and the result is a little different.

WRITTEN INSTRUCTIONS! Click HERE for a downloadable file.
1 skein of Caron Simply Soft Yarn and an H hook.
Begin with a slip knot. Leave a long enough tail for weaving in.
Round 1: Ch 4, slip stitch (sl st) to form a circle
Round 2: Ch 2, 12 half double crochet (hdc) inside the circle, sl st (12 stitches total)
NOTE:The ch 2 does NOT count as a hdc when you are counting your round for THIS pattern as it “usually” would or could in other patterns. It was creating a little gap, so I made this adjustment 😉
Round 3: ch 2, (2 hdc, hdc 1 and repeat), sl st (18 stitches total)
Round 4: ch2, (2 hdc, hdc 2 and repeat) , sl st (24 stitches total)
Round 5: ch2, (2 hdc, hdc 3 and repeat), sl st (30 stitches total)
Round 6: ch2, (2 hdc, hdc 4 and repeat), sl st (36 stitches total)
Round 7: ch2, (2 hdc, hdc 5 and repeat), sl st (42 stitches total)
Round 8: ch2, (2 hdc, hdc 6 and repeat), sl st (48 stitches total)
Round 9: hdc in each stitch all the way around, sl st (48 stitches total)
Round 10: ch 2, (hdc 9, 2 hdc and repeat 4 times) hdc the remaining 9 stitches, sl st (52 total stitches)
Round 11: ch 2, hdc 25, 2 hdc, hdc 25 and sl st (54 total stitches)
Round 12: ch 2, (hdc 7, 2hdc and repeat 6 times and hdc in each of the remaining 6 stitches, sl st (60 total stitches)
Round 13: ch 2 and puff stitch in each stitch all the way around (do no slip stitch at the end of the round, just continue with your puff stitch)
Round 14-23: puff stitch in each stitch all the way around
Round 24: start where you first started your puff stitches (use a stitch marker if needed) sc in each stitch all the way around. stop once you get back to the beginning (60 total stitches)
Round 25: (sc 5, 1 sc decrease and repeat 8 times) sc in remaining 5 stitches. (52 total stitches)
Round 26: (sc 10, sc decrease and reapeat 4 times) sc in the remaining 4 stitches (48 total stitches) Try on Hat… (if it fits well, sc two more rounds in each space all the way around otherwise decrease a few more stitches)
Round 27: (sc 8, sc decrease and repeat 4 times) sc in remaining 8 stitches (44 total stitches)
Round 28: sc in each stitch all the way around (44 total stitches) tie off and weave in ends
hdc: Yarn over, insert hook, yarn over, pull yarn through stitch, yarn over, draw yarn through all 3 loops on hook
puff stitch: yarn over, insert hook, yarn over and pull through, yarn over, insert hook, yarn over and pull through, yarn over and draw through the 5 loops on the hook at once.
sc: insert hook, yarn over, pull through, yarn over, draw through 2 loops
sc decrease: insert hook, yarn over, pull through, insert hook in NEXT chain, yarn over, pull through, yarn over, draw through 3 loops on your hook (this essentially makes 2 stitches 1 stitch)

Hi Melanie. I am making the slightly slouchy hat. I am really enjoying making it. This was my 1st try with the puff stitch. I love it!! Thanks for sharing your pattern. I can’t wait to finish this one and start another one!!!!
I started on the puff stitches and somehow ended up with a count of 61?
I made this pattern this weekend with 4 seasons 8ply pure wool entwine (I live in NZ and do not have the recommended yarns available) I am surprised that all the experienced crocheters are having trouble with size, I found provided I used loose stitching and didn’t do the second lot of decreasing on the band (as she suggests) it works perfectly. Thank you for a fantastic pattern.
The pattern makes a really tiny hat, even though I followed the written one for the correct yarn type. I ended up adding at least 20 more rounds before putting in the single crochet rounds, and didn’t need to reduce at all for it to be quite snug on my head. I even added in another increase further down, and changed up some of the stitches for a different look.
I just made this hat last night.I followed the video only, and used a yarn suggested Lion Brand Heartland yarn and it was fine for my head..its a chunkier yarn then Caron Simply Soft which instruction are adjusted for here..If you want to make your hat bigger adjust your HDC ‘s to more increase more rounds increase yur band size and use a larger hook.
I’m using the Caron simply soft yarn and I am getting way more stitches in each round. And it keeps ruffling up as I go on. I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong, help!
I finished my slightly slouchy hat today but I had some of the same problems as others. I used the Caron Simply Soft. My hat looks nothing like the hats shown. Mine has a pointed top something like a dunce cap. ; ). I used the pattern specified for Caron. I have made lots of hats but can you tell me what causes the point and how to avoid it.
If the yarn that I’m using is still smaller than the caron simply soft yarn do I just make a few more rounds like rounds 3-8?
round 11 i only got only 52 stitches. i did 2 times, i count more than 6 times. how do i get 54 stitches??
I think it should read… 2 hdc, hdc 25, and repeat twice, this will give you 54 stitches and will have a stitch in each of the 52 on the previous round
Oh. I forgot to mention that I used Red Heart Saver mixed. It fit my toddler head perfectly (20.5); so not for an adult but maybe I used the wrong skein.

Hi Melanie!
Great pattern! I just made one in hunter green. I have started making another but realize I need it to be larger in size. I need it to be for size 26″ head. How do I modify the pattern to make it larger?
Thanks again for everything!
Michelle
Can I use worsted sayelle four ply
For rounds that say to repeat like round 10, do I repeat everything starting with chaining 2 or do I just repeat what is in the parenthesis?
Thank u thank u for converting this pattern to Simply Soft. This pattern works great & I love my hat! I also just happened to have that color blue on hand as well. It is really important to ensure the correct stitch count at the end of each row as well as using the indicated materials for this & any pattern to turn out correctly. Thanks again!
I AM AT THE 13 ROUND USING THE SIMPLY SOFT FROM YOUR WRITTEN INSTRUCTIONS AND AM A EXPERIENCED CROCHETER AND THIS IS TO POINTED AND TO SMALL SO THE INSTRUCTIONS DO NOT FIT THE PICTURE SO NOWi AM RIPPING THIS OUT SO NOT TO WASTE ANY MORE OF MY TIME
I am not an experienced crocheter, and have never done a hat before and I had no problem what so ever and it turned out looking just like the picture and I used the Caron simply soft.
I agree. I am an experienced crocheter and this hat is way too small for a regular sized adult head. the hat looks good by itself but there is no way this is going to fit a normal person. very disappointed with this pattern.
The video is using a different pattern for another yarn so if you use simply soft, you don’t do the stitches that she instructed but the ones in the pattern above the video.
I followed the video and this hat came out really small and is not slouchy at all. Now that I am finished I just realized that the written instructions here are different from the video. The written instructions would be better to follow since it will be a larger hat not like the video which is for a small child.
I was doing a hunt for file personal bankruptcy and encountered http://www.iheartstitching.com. Thank you for the details. My partner is thinking about filing chapter 13 and I’m doing all all of the research that I can. Climes
Could we use a different hook size to make this beanie?
You could but you would need to adjust the pattern size/gauge. Sorry if I am too late just thought I’d help!
I’m stuck at Round 11 for this pattern. ” ch 2, hdc 25, 2 hdc, hdc 25 and sl st (54 total stitches)” That only equals 52 stitches, but it says there should be 54. Am I supposed to 2hdc after the final 25?
i got stuck here as well. did you add 2hdc at the end of this round?
I added another 2HDC and the stitch count came out to 54.
I made the infinity scarf this weekend and used Lion Brand chunky with wool. My scarf is very long and not very pliable. I like it a lot but certainly not like the picture. 2 questions –did I use wrong yarn? and you said 72 inches (which is what I did) but now thinking you may have meant 72 chains? Can you please let me know as I want to try this again. I used the size P hook as you did.
I’m not sure what size a p is as I go by the numbers, but I used an 11.5 and make sure that you use a loose hand. The tighter you pull it the stiffer it will be
How is the blue slouchy hat different then the black one
The difference is the size that you’d end up with…
