I saw a lot of people talking about the Modern Mini Quilt Challenge over at Ellison Lane Quilts and decided I wanted to participate. I had this idea floating around in my head that I wanted to try and a mini quilt is a great way to hash out ideas and see how they turn out!
First of all… here is my finished mini quilt.
It measures 11.5 x 13.
And here is the inspiration…
Lately I have been very inspired by fashion. The patterns, textures and prints that are found in clothing are often on trend in Home Decor as well. I love this ombre-esque splatter skirt that I saw in In Style Magazine. See my little clipping I circled?
I wanted to play around with the variation, the light to dark with speckles and splotches of other colors.
I added some touches of embroidery to play into that splatter painted look, but I kept it simple and didn’t go too crazy with it.
I loved the Tula Pink coral fabric I used as the color splatters as well, the corals in this fabric are divine and the chartreuse green is a lovely compliment.
I decided to quilt it in a jagged free motion, and reference the current aztec and Native American trend that is so big right now. I also chose an orange thread for the top Kona Medium grey portion of the quilt and white thread for the bottom portion to keep the contrast and a minimum because I didn’t want the quilting to distract from the piecing but rather enhance it.
This is the back of the mini quilt, a fun floral in a similar color family.
What do you think of my mini quilt? Hop on over to Ellison Lane and check out the other beautiful entries!! There are some magnificent ones!!
