Crochet Granny Square Mug Cozy Tutorial

February 20, 2017 By: Melanie

Today I have a new crochet tutorial for you!! It’s this adorable granny square mug cozy.  And you know me, it’s beginner friendly with a step by step video tutorial to go with it.

Materials:

Yarn of choice, I used cotton yarn I had on hand.

Crochet hook, I used a G (1 size smaller than the recommended hook size so that it would fit my mug)

Yarn Needle

Cute Button

Scissors

Cheers to your mug cozy! Grab a cuppa tea and make this in no time.  Here are the written instructions.

Written Instructions:

Basic Granny Square:

Begin using color A with a magic ring

Round 1:Ch3 (counts as tr), 2tr into ring, (ch 2, 3tr into ring) 3 times. Chain 2 to join with initial group and slip stitch (ss) into top of chain 3.  Fasten off.

Round 2: Join next yarn color (color b), by connecting into the chain 2 space with slip stitch or knot. Ch3 (counts as tr), (2tr,ch2,3tr) into the same ch 2 space. (3tr, ch2, 3tr) in the next 3 ch 2 spaces and ss to top of chain 3 at beginning. Fasten off

Border: Connect color A to the granny square in the ch 2 space with a ss or know. sc in every stitch all the way around and put 3 sc stitches in each corner.  Join with ss to complete the border, fasten off and weave in ends.  Weave in any other loose ends.

Make a total of 3 granny squares

Joining the granny square: from the back side of the square, use your yarn needle and strand of color A yarn to sew the squares together.  Starting with the center stitch on the corner stitches, insert the needle in the back 2 loops from one square to the other zig zagging down to sew the squares together.  Fasten off and weave in the ends.

Sew button by hand in the center of one of the outside granny squares using a thick thread and needle.  Button can be standard or have a shank.

Make strap: ss in the center of the granny square opposite the button. sc 2 along the border, ch 1, turn work and sc 2 – repeat to create the strap.  Make the strap as long as you need for your mug so that the cozy will fit.  Once it is long enough, ch 4-6 stitches or however many are needed to create the button hole.  Fasten off and weave in ends.
