DIY Distressed Frames – Beachy Chic

We were at a gallery down in Waikiki and saw these really awesome recycled frames from old homes torn down in North Shore.  They were very cool but a little pricey.  We actually bought a fun print and already had a vintage looking map of Hawaii at home, so when hubby and I were searching for frames he had the idea for me to try and recreate the frames we saw and liked.  So we bought 2 plain wood frames at the local crafts store, an 11×14 for $11.99 and a 16×20 for $14.99.  Here’s what I did to make them look Beachy Chic!!

Here is the frame.

Next I used this spray paint and put on a rough coat.

After the rough coat…

Once that was dry, I used this spray paint for another rough coat.

Don’t worry if there are speckles or uneven spots… its better if there is some!

Next I took a sanding block and did some artful sanding… be specific about where you sand.  You want it to be heavier in some areas, more scratchy in others.

I wanted it to look nice and smooth, professional and purposeful so I decided to seal it.

This is the little print we bought at the gallery.

I tried to make each frame look slightly different, see how the map has more blue?
