I finished the Japanese Squares Baby Quilt, mentioned here a few days ago. It was a nice quick project. It gave me some practice at matching up my seams to get them perfect and I’ve been working on my hand stitching, so the binding looks the best out of all my quilts I think. I originally wanted to bind it in satin, but the only satin binding I had was white and you could see the print through it, so it didn’t look good. I’ll have to save it for another project. The backing is minky, so soft and cuddly! I read nightmare stories about people having trouble quilting minky, but mine worked just fine, so I was thankful for that!
The stats:
31 x 35
90 squares
warm and white batting
minky backing
free motion meandering quilting
bound in kona ash
The use: play mat for my baby girl due in June

do you have any tips on working with the minky--I'd like to try it myself.

This is beautiful - I've got some extra Minky and I wanted to try to make a baby quilt with it. I would most likely do Free-motion stitches on mine as well. I was really curious as to how this worked. I was even thinking about doing 4 layers - Top/thin batting/Backing quilting it, and THEN adding the minky backing.

It turned out great! I love all the different squares and the simplicity of the pattern using just squares. I can't believe how fast you can finish a quilt. It motivates me to finish some of the projects I have had in the works for some time. Baby girl is going to love this quilt and I love the Minky on the back.

Wow, Mel, it looks awesome. Love the meandering stitching over the pattern of the squares.. it's very cool. And if you make sheets for yourself from Minky, I want a set too. (But just for my side of the bed. :) )
